RealtyTrac: New York State January 2014 total foreclosures increase from month and year-ago levels

In its U.S. Foreclosures Market Report for January 2014, which reports default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions, RealtyTrac Inc. reported New York State had 3,827 total foreclosures, a 13.66-percent increase from December 2013 and a 31.11-percent increase from the same time last year. 

New York State ranks 35 out of all 50 states for monthly total foreclosure filings. One in every 2,117 housing units in New York State received a foreclosure filing in January.

Foreclosure filings were reported nationally on 124,419 U.S. properties in January. This is a 7.87 percent increase from December but a 17.53 percent drop from January 2013. Nationally, one in every 1,058 housing units received a foreclosure filing.

New York State home sales remained strong to start the new year with 8,698 closed sales, falling just shy of the 2017 record for January, according to the annual housing market report released by the New York State Association of REALTORS.
