U.S. Commerce Department: Northeast housing starts and building permits rise in July

Privately-owned housing starts in July were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 144,000 for the Northeast, up 44 percent from June, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department.

Nationally, housing starts were at an annual rate of 1,093,000, a 15.7-percent increase from the June total of 945,000.

Building permits for the Northeast also rose in July, increasing 18.8 percent to 120,000, while nationally, building permits rose 8.1 percent to 1,052,000.

New York State home sales remained strong to start the new year with 8,698 closed sales, falling just shy of the 2017 record for January, according to the annual housing market report released by the New York State Association of REALTORS.
