U.S. Commerce Department: Northeast housing starts and building permits fall in August

Privately-owned housing starts in August fell 33.7 percent for the Northeast to 108,000, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department. July’s total was 163,000.
Nationally, housing starts were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,126,000, a 3-percent decrease from the revised July total of 1,161,000.
Building permits for the Northeast also fell in August, dropping 4.4 percent to 109,000. Nationally, building permits rose 3.5 percent to 1,170,000.

New York State home sales remained strong to start the new year with 8,698 closed sales, falling just shy of the 2017 record for January, according to the annual housing market report released by the New York State Association of REALTORS.
