U.S. Commerce Department: Northeast housing starts and building permits fall in January

Privately-owned housing starts in January fell 3.7 percent for the Northeast to 156,000, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department. December’s total was 162,000.
Nationally, housing starts were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,099,000, a 3.8-percent decrease from the revised December total of 1,143,000.
Building permits for the Northeast fell 55.4 percent in January to 90,000, down from 202,000 in December. Nationally, building permits fell slightly, dropping 0.2 percent to 1,202,000.
