U.S. Commerce Department: Northeast housing starts and building permits jump in December

Privately-owned housing starts in December rose 24.4 percent for the Northeast to 163,000, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department. November’s total was 131,000.

Nationally, housing starts were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,149,000, a 2.5-percent decrease from the revised November total of 1,179,000.

Building permits for the Northeast rose 62 percent in December reaching 209,000, up from 129,000 in November. Nationally, building permits fell 3.9 percent to 1,232,000.
