U.S. Commerce Department: Northeast housing starts fall, while building permits rise

Privately-owned housing starts in February fell 3.5 percent in the Northeast to 109,000, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department. January’s total was 113,000.

Nationally, housing starts were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 1,236,000, a 7-percent decreased from the revised January total of 1,329,000.

Building permits for the Northeast rose 12.7 percent to 133,000, while nationally, building permits fell 5.7 percent to 1,298,000.
